ANU Programs and Courses Accreditation Handbook
The Accreditation Handbook defines standards and establishes governance mechanisms and processes for academic matters, including the naming and post-nominals of awards, the introduction, modification, review, and disestablishment of academic programs, and the design and delivery of programs, professional development offerings and Microcredentials.
The handbook can be located at: https://www.anu.edu.au/anu-policy-handbooks/academic-accreditation-handbook
The College Education Governance Office operates within the framework of the handbook. Please note that this handbook was introduced in 1 January 2025. College protocols will be updated to align with the handbook throughout the year. If there is a conflict between the handbook at the college protocol, the procedure in the handbook applies until such time the college protocol can be updated.
Standard approval processes
All change requests to curriculum objects, including late course scheduling, go through a formal approval process. The approval processes and timelines vary depending on the nature of the request, the timing of the request and the curriculum object in question.
If in doubt about where to start, please email science.curriculum@anu.edu.au
Approval cycle
Some education governance and curriculum management processes, such as curriculum reviews and programs and courses amendments are undertaken on a yearly cycle and follow strict timelines so that the information published in the Programs and Courses catalogue is stable by the time students enrol for the following academic year (late Nov/early Dec).
Curriculum amendments are submitted through the CMS. Timelines depend on the curriculum object type and the nature of the amendment but the process generally starts with the school and flows to the College for review by the College Education Sub Committee. Once reviewed, they progress for approval by the College Education Committee and subsequent publication; or endorsement by the College Education Committee and progression to central committees (Academic Quality Assurance Committee and Academic Board).
College timelines have been crafted working back from the the terminal Academic Board meeting in alignment with the Centrally approved schedule of updates to Programs and Courses. College Education Committee dates, including standard approval process, workflow and schedules can be accessed here:
Other activities, are undertaken on a shorter, 6-monthly (or other) cycle such as:
- Class scheduling
- Timetabling
- Class summary generation
Indicative timelines and deadlines for these activities, specifically relevant for school administrators, can be accessed here:
