About

Welcome to the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) website offered by the Science Teaching and Learning Centre (STLC).

In this website, we hope you will find:

  • Information about WIL
  • Information and resources to supervise a student on an internship
  • Information to help when speaking with a potential Host organisation about an internship
  • Timelines related to internships

What is WIL?

WIL refers to student experiences of work within curriculum through engagement with authentic and genuine activities with and for industry, business or community partners, and which are credit-bearing and assessed.1

Currently, internships are the primary WIL activities supported by the STLC.

Internships

Definition

The Science Internship program is an opportunity for students to gain industry experience during their Science degrees. Placements are typically with a Host organisation related to a field of science, and the students are required to apply their technical skills and science training in a professional context. An internship is a great way for students to see what a career with a degree in a Science field could look like, and will give students exposure to current industry and professional practice.

Scope

This is for 2nd and 3rd year Undergraduate, Master, and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students applying scientific knowledge in a professional environment. Students must meet the eligibility requirements stated in the study guides and host organisation listings.

Supervision

Each intern will have a Host supervisor and an ANU supervisor. The Host supervisor will provide the hands-on supervision and guidance in the workplace.

The ANU supervisor will be familiar with and interested in the area of the internship. They will form the link between the Host organisation and the University and guide the student as an academic mentor throughout the placement. The ANU supervisor will meet with the student at least 4 times during the internship.

For coursework internships, the ANU supervisor is responsible for grading three assessment items (proposal, report and oral presentation) in consultation with the Host supervisor. The Internship Convener will grade the fourth assessment item - the career development program/reflection.

For HDR internships, the ANU supervisor is responsible for grading three assessment items (written report, oral presentation and reflection) in consultation with the Host supervisor. The student will complete the fourth assessment item - the HDR Internship Data Form – online.
